Existential nihilism posits that life lacks any objective meaning or purpose. Similarly, generative AI creates content without any inherent meaning or understanding of the significance of its creations. The generated content might be aesthetically pleasing, innovative, or even emotionally evocative, but it does not possess any inherent purpose or significance. Original creations has always been an attempt of human beings to reach the level of God. It is through creations that human beings imitate the omnipotent superpower of carving out worlds of their own. The worlds they carve out have their own meaning. The admiration of art, literature or any origination creation for that matter is ultimately an exploration into the thought wave of the creator. The explorer may reach a void but that does not take away the inherent meaning or purpose of a creation. Generative AI on the other hand, creates content without any inherent meaning or purpose. Maybe it has one...the amalgamation of stereotypes and biases from the human world it derives it's prompts from. But who would give it the capability to look beyond ?
Existential nihilism challenges the notion of a guiding force or higher authority giving meaning to life. In the context of generative AI, there is no guiding consciousness behind the creative process. In this regard, generative AI bolsters the long held notion of nihilists that creation can happen without any rhyme of reason. It doubles down on the belief system, that there might not be any guiding force behind creation after all. It just happened !!

Similarly, the meaning people derive from generative AI-generated content might vary significantly based on their individual interpretations, emotions, and experiences. Generative AI disrupts the whole purpose of communication. This is a one way conversation. The entity which creates do not have a message to convey while the entity that consumes have more than one interpretation. Generative AI is the perfect invention for a post-truth world where truth is relative and driven by opinion of the influential. May be it always was that way !!

Some may find solace in the process of creation itself, despite the lack of ultimate purpose.
Generative AI creations can sometimes reflect our own existence back to us, emphasising the seemingly random nature of life and the pursuit of meaning. This reflection might serve as a reminder of the human condition and our constant quest for significance. For example, just few days back, I was going through some images generated by an AI system with prompts like "Metro in Kolkata" or "Metro in Bihar" or "Metro in UP". It was wreaking of negative stereotypes. "Metro in Kolkata" did not show nobel laureates as passengers, not did the metro in bihar was designed with madhubani painting or the metro in UP did not show the deep cultural roots of the lucknowi tehzeeb. It shows a mirror to us. If the whole internet is a black box which spits out its inputs in the form of generative AI creations, then we must be very careful about what we enter.
